Toronto School of Puppetry Winter Workshops 2022:

Introduction to Puppetry with Household Objects
With Alexandra Montagnese
Sundays, March 20 & 27 1:00 to 2:30 pm

This two-part class offers students the basics of puppetry with household objects focusing primarily on object table top manipulation. The first class will explore the fundamentals of puppetry through a series of explorations using movement and narrative exercises. The second class will dive deeper into imagination and storytelling to build unique style and expression in performance. Materials: ann@puppetmongers.com

Bio: Alexandra Montagnese is a Dora nominated actor, puppeteer, and theatre creator. She is a founding member of Toronto’s experimental puppetry cabaret: Concrete Cabaret. Alex has taught at York University, Shakespeare in Action, Leahurst College, Watermark Theatre, Branksome Hall, the Akiva School, and many camps and workshops. In 2022, she will be performing her puppet show A Short History of Niagara, which she created with Mike Petersen at the Shaw Festival.

 

Introduction to Puppetry with Household Objects

Whether you are missing drama class, looking to improve your pubic speaking skills, or simply wanting to do some fun activities while you’re home, these lessons are for you!

Lessons (stand alone or part of a series):

Acting:  Basic acting skills in voice, movement, and text.

Puppetry: Practice based fundamentals of becoming a puppeteer by developing object manipulation skills!

Monologues: Essential skill building for performing monologues, which is an important part of auditioning. (I can tailor lessons to specific text requests.)

Introduction to Shakespeare: Language, themes, and plot study through an introduction of his major works.

Session times: Session times are flexible (between 10:00AM – 6:00PM). Each session is 1 hour.

Family Sessions:

If you are interested in booking a family session, I am willing to provide a unique lesson plan upon request, that is geared towards your children’s interest and age and/or simply pick your favourite from the options listed below.

Lessons are geared towards ages 6 -12, but I can adjust to any age!

Pricing: $50.00 /session paid by e-transfer

About me: 

I am a professional actor, puppeteer, and arts educator. I completed studies at both McGill University and York University in English, Drama, and Theatre Performance.  (Please see my resume on my “CV” page.)  I am interested in sharing the magic of performance with students on stage or in the classroom. I am excited to offer these lessons online for students who are eager to keep practicing this amazing art, or to just have fun and connect!

My approach is practice-based so students can connect and have fun with the amazing art of performance.  I am flexible and open-minded ensuring I creating a safe learning space for each unique students needs.

Experience:

I have produced, directed and acted in numerous professional touring productions of adult and children’s theatre including:

              • Puppet Theatre;
              • Fringe Festivals;
              • Shakespeare Productions;
              • Theatre for Young Audiences for schools throughout the GTA and rural Ontario;
              • Rehearsal Director at the Akiva School in Montreal;
              • Young People’s Theatre Young Playwrights Unit;
              • Private Shakespeare lessons with the Toronto Catholic District School Board;
              • Taught ESL and have worked with acting students whose first language is not English.
I have the “Enhanced Security Clearance (criminal record check) for Vulnerable Sector Populations.”

Coaching and Tutoring

I offer one-on-one coaching sessions at $50 / hr. I can help you with upcoming theatre auditions, read for self tapes, and coach general acting.

I also offer tutoring sessions for those studying theatre in high school or university undergraduate programs including interpreting and understanding Shakespeare! I’m happy to cater my sessions to your needs!
